Kyoto Station Shinkansen Access: Gates, Platforms & Tickets

At Kyoto Station, follow signs for a Shinkansen ticket gate if you arrive from outside the paid area, or a Shinkansen transfer gate if you are already inside the JR conventional-line area. The north Karasuma side and south Hachijo side describe street access; they are not interchangeable with the names of the paid gates.
JR Central's map lists Shinkansen platforms 11 and 12 toward Tokyo and 13 and 14 toward Shin-Osaka and Hakata. Confirm the train number, time, platform and car on the departure display before boarding.
Karasuma and Hachijo: choose the approach from your location
The Karasuma side is north, toward Kyoto Tower; Hachijo is south. The Shinkansen area is on the south side of the station. Arriving from a south-side hotel or taxi stop can make Hachijo access convenient, but it does not save a fixed number of minutes for every traveller.
If you arrive on the Karasuma side, follow the station's Shinkansen signs and the public walkway shown on the map. Do not enter a conventional-line paid gate simply because it is named “Central”. The ordinary Central Ticket Gate and Shinkansen Central Ticket Gate are distinct.
Which Kyoto Shinkansen gate should you use?
Use the official JR Central Kyoto Station layout alongside the signs around you. Its English labels include the following gates:
| Where you are | Map labels to look for | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Outside the paid area, travelling by Shinkansen | Shinkansen Central Ticket Gate; Shinkansen Hachijo Ticket Gate; Shinkansen Hachijo East Ticket Gate | Use the appropriate entrance from your approach, with a valid Shinkansen boarding credential. |
| Inside the JR conventional-line paid area | Shinkansen Central Transfer Gate; Shinkansen East Transfer Gate | Follow the transfer signs and use the required conventional-line and Shinkansen tickets or supported credentials. |
| At an ordinary JR gate | Central Ticket Gate; West Ticket Gate; Hachijo East Ticket Gate | Read the full gate name: these are not the similarly named Shinkansen gates. |
| Arriving by subway or Kintetsu | Subway (Karasuma Line) Ticket Gate; Kintetsu Line Ticket Gate | Follow the onward Shinkansen signs and the transfer procedure for that operator and your tickets. |
The official English image spells Hachijo as “Hachijyo”. Use the complete gate name and Shinkansen symbol to distinguish the gates. If your boarding credential is rejected or the route is unclear, ask the staffed gate before continuing.
Shinkansen platforms and train direction
| Platforms on the official map | Direction | Check before boarding |
|---|---|---|
| 11–12 | Toward Tokyo, including the Nagoya direction | Your departure display identifies the actual platform and train. |
| 13–14 | Toward Shin-Osaka and Hakata | Check whether your booked train reaches your destination or requires a transfer. |
Shin-Osaka Station is the Shinkansen stop; Osaka Station is a different station. Once on the platform, follow the car-position signs for your reservation. Do not infer your platform only from a direction table or assume that every train stops at the same intermediate stations.
For the journey itself, see our Tokyo–Kyoto ticket and fare guide and Japan Shinkansen network guide.
Arriving by a JR local train, Haruka or Thunderbird
Arriving on a JR conventional service, follow signs to a Shinkansen transfer gate rather than leaving the station without checking your ticket's conditions. The route from your arrival platform depends on its location and the lift or stairs you use.
Thunderbird now connects the Osaka/Kyoto corridor with Tsuruga. Continuing toward Kanazawa or Toyama uses the Hokuriku Shinkansen connection at Tsuruga; it is not a direct Thunderbird ride to Kanazawa. Haruka, the Nara Line and the Sagano Line use the conventional area at Kyoto, separate from the Shinkansen platforms.
For a connection, compare the actual arrival and departure times and allow for the platform route, ticket collection and any assistance you need. A universal five- or ten-minute transfer promise would not account for those differences.
Paper tickets, pickup codes, QR-Tickets and IC cards
An online confirmation is not automatically a gate ticket. Read the delivery and boarding instructions for the product you bought before reaching the station.
- Paper tickets: follow the operator's instructions for the tickets issued. JR Central explains how to use the Shinkansen gate and how conventional-line tickets are handled at a transfer gate. Retrieve tickets returned by the machine and keep them for the journey.
- Ticket collection: a pickup code or voucher may require an eligible machine or counter. Check collection locations, required documents and opening hours; booking online does not guarantee that collection queues disappear.
- QR-Ticket: direct scanning applies only when the issued product supports gate entry. A QR pickup code and a boarding QR-Ticket perform different jobs.
- IC card: for a supported ticketless product, the card must be correctly registered or assigned to the reservation. Simply holding or topping up Suica or ICOCA does not create a Shinkansen booking.
SmartEX's official boarding guide describes its supported boarding methods. Those instructions apply to SmartEX products; use the instructions issued with a JapanTrain booking for that booking.
Lifts, luggage and departure preparation
The official map marks lifts, toilets and luggage facilities. Plan a step-free route from your actual entrance or arrival platform; the shortest stairs route may not suit a wheelchair or large suitcase. If you need assistance, contact the operator ahead of travel and confirm the meeting point.
Allow time for collection, queues and finding your car. There is no single arrival buffer that guarantees boarding. If you need storage, check a facility's location, hours, size limits and current availability; neither an empty locker nor a fixed storage price can be promised.
Frequently asked questions
Which side of Kyoto Station is closest to the Shinkansen area?
The Shinkansen area is on the south Hachijo side. The best approach depends on your starting location, ticket collection needs and whether you require lifts.
Is the Central Ticket Gate a Shinkansen gate?
The ordinary Central Ticket Gate and Shinkansen Central Ticket Gate are different. Read the full gate name and follow the Shinkansen signs.
Which Kyoto platforms serve trains toward Tokyo?
JR Central's map lists platforms 11 and 12 toward Tokyo. Confirm the actual platform, train number and departure time on the station display.
Which Kyoto platforms serve trains toward Shin-Osaka?
The official map lists platforms 13 and 14 toward Shin-Osaka and Hakata. Your train's departure display determines the platform to use.
How do I transfer from a JR local train to the Shinkansen?
Follow signs inside the JR conventional-line area to a Shinkansen transfer gate. Use the tickets or supported credentials required for both parts of your journey.
Can I scan any booking QR code at a Kyoto Shinkansen gate?
No. A pickup QR code may require ticket collection. Direct gate scanning requires a supported boarding QR-Ticket and the instructions for that product.
Can I board the Shinkansen just by tapping Suica or ICOCA?
Only a supported ticketless reservation with the card correctly registered or assigned permits that method. An IC card's stored balance alone is not a Shinkansen booking.
Does Thunderbird still run directly from Kyoto to Kanazawa?
No. Thunderbird serves the Kyoto–Tsuruga section; journeys onward to Kanazawa connect to the Hokuriku Shinkansen at Tsuruga.
