Shinagawa Shinkansen: Platforms, Gates & Haneda Transfers

The cover is a general Shinkansen illustration, not a photograph of Shinagawa Station. Use the linked official maps and current station signs for navigation.

For Shinkansen travel from Shinagawa, check three things first: your ticket must show the correct boarding station; use the dedicated Shinkansen entrance or transfer gate; then match your train number, departure time, platform and car with the station display. The station serves the Tokaido Shinkansen, including services towards Nagoya, Kyoto and Shin-Osaka.

This page covers bullet-train boarding and connections. For Konan and Takanawa exits, lockers, shopping and local station navigation, use the separate Shinagawa Station guide.

Shinagawa Shinkansen platforms and station map

Open JR Central's station maps and choose Shinagawa. Its map labels Shinkansen tracks 21–24: 21/22 for the Tokyo direction and 23/24 for the Nagoya/Shin-Osaka direction. These labels help you understand the layout; the departure display determines the actual platform for your selected train.

The JR East Shinagawa floor map connects the conventional JR platforms, Keikyu side, public concourse and Shinkansen gates. The 2F map checked on 10 October 2026 is labelled July 2026 and marks construction areas and accessible routes. Use the current signs if a walkway has changed.

Shinkansen ticket gates or transfer gates?

Inside the conventional JR paid areaShinkansen North or South Transfer Gate.Follow the instructions for the local JR journey and the Shinkansen booking together.
Arriving on Keikyu from Haneda or another destinationLeave or transfer from Keikyu as your tickets require, then follow the Shinkansen signs.Keikyu travel and Shinkansen travel are separate ticketed journeys.

JR Central's map distinguishes all four Shinkansen gates. Choose the approach that fits your arrival route; do not infer the fastest gate only from your reserved car number. The conventional JR gates labelled Central Ticket Gate and North Ticket Gate on the map are different from the dedicated Shinkansen gates.

If you need lifts or a step-free route, use the accessibility symbols on the map and ask staff about the current route. Allow time for walking, queues, ticket collection and unfamiliar gate procedures.

Haneda Airport to Shinagawa, then Shinkansen

  1. Identify your airport terminal and the corresponding Keikyu station.
  2. Use the Keikyu route and fare search for a connection to Shinagawa; check whether the selected service requires a change.
  3. At Shinagawa, follow the Tokaido Shinkansen signs and use the correct gate for your approach and tickets.
  4. Confirm your train, platform and car on the departure display before boarding.

The official Haneda Airport rail guide distinguishes Keikyu from the Tokyo Monorail. The monorail runs to Hamamatsucho, so it is a different itinerary from the Keikyu connection to Shinagawa.

Do not select an onward departure using a rail-only airport travel time. Immigration, baggage collection, terminal walking, delays and the Shinagawa transfer all affect the connection. There is no single guaranteed transfer time for every flight, terminal, ticket and accessibility need.

Kyoto, Shin-Osaka and other destinations

Nozomi, Hikari and Kodama have different stopping patterns on the Tokaido Shinkansen. Check that your actual train serves your destination and whether your itinerary is direct. Some trains continue on the Sanyo Shinkansen; a station's presence on the network does not mean every service goes there.

For an Osaka journey, the Shinkansen station is Shin-Osaka. Osaka Station and other central districts require an onward local connection. Our Tokyo to Osaka guide explains the wider route, but your own search and ticket must show Shinagawa if that is where you intend to board.

Shinagawa and Tokyo are different boarding stations. When comparing Tokyo to Kyoto options or another Tokyo-area departure, include the local journey to the selected station. Do not substitute a Tokyo-origin quote for confirmation of a Shinagawa-origin booking. Check the boarding station and product conditions before paying or changing plans.

Use the JR Central timetable for planning and confirm your chosen date. Its basic timetable does not list every train. Fare, availability and journey time depend on the service, date, seat class and ticket product.

Paper ticket, QR code or IC card?

Use the boarding method supplied with the ticket you actually bought. A payment confirmation, a booking reference or a generic QR code is not automatically a valid gate credential.

As an operator-specific example, SmartEX's boarding guide distinguishes QR-Ticket, a designated IC card, and collected paper tickets. That guide applies to SmartEX products; it does not establish the delivery method for a JapanTrain booking. Check issuance and collection instructions before going to the gate, especially when combining a local train ticket with a Shinkansen ticket.

Before boarding, match the train number and departure time on your ticket with the display, then check the platform, car and seat. If the gate rejects your ticket or card, ask staff rather than repeatedly tapping a different credential.

JR Pass, seat class and large suitcases

A nationwide JAPAN RAIL PASS alone does not cover Nozomi. Eligible pass holders can use it with the designated NOZOMI MIZUHO additional ticket bought before boarding. Confirm the pass, service, section and seat conditions; regional passes have their own rules. Our JR Pass comparison guide helps you compare the full itinerary cost.

For an ordinary suitcase on the Tokaido/Sanyo Shinkansen, combined length, width and height over 160 cm and up to 250 cm requires the appropriate oversized-baggage seat reservation. Baggage exceeding 250 cm cannot be brought under these rules. Reserving an oversized baggage area adds no separate fee to the corresponding reserved-seat price.

Read the official baggage rules for weight, length, quantity and item exceptions, and our practical baggage guide. A Green Car ticket or a rear seat does not automatically reserve the required storage space.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Shinkansen platforms are at Shinagawa?

JR Central's map labels tracks 21–24 for the Tokaido/Sanyo Shinkansen: 21/22 towards Tokyo and 23/24 towards Nagoya and Shin-Osaka. Check the departure display for your actual train's platform.

What is the difference between a Shinkansen ticket gate and transfer gate?

The North and South Ticket Gates are approached from outside the JR paid area. The North and South Transfer Gates connect the conventional JR paid area with the Shinkansen area. Use the approach and ticket handling appropriate to your journey.

How do I connect from Haneda Airport to the Shinkansen?

Check a Keikyu connection from your terminal to Shinagawa, then follow the Shinkansen signs. Allow for airport formalities, delays, station walking and any ticket collection before choosing an onward departure.

Can I take a train from Shinagawa to Kyoto or Osaka?

Tokaido Shinkansen services connect Shinagawa with Kyoto and Shin-Osaka. Confirm the selected train's stops and your boarding station. Central Osaka needs an onward local connection.

Can I use any QR code at the Shinkansen gate?

No. Use the issued boarding method specified for your ticket. A payment confirmation or booking reference is not automatically a gate credential.

Can I take Nozomi with a nationwide Japan Rail Pass?

The pass alone does not cover Nozomi. Eligible holders need the designated additional ticket bought before boarding and used with a valid pass; confirm the section and product conditions.

Do large suitcases need a reservation?

An ordinary suitcase with combined dimensions over 160 cm and up to 250 cm requires the appropriate oversized-baggage seat reservation. Check the complete operator rules; a seat class alone does not reserve that space.
