Shinagawa Station Guide: Konan & Takanawa Exits, Transfers

Shinagawa Station Guide: Konan & Takanawa Exits, Transfers

Shinagawa Station has two main exit sides: Konan (East) and Takanawa (West). Choose the side for your destination before leaving the ticketed area. JR conventional trains, Keikyu and the Tokaido Shinkansen have different gates; an exit name is not a train platform.

This guide covers exits, station maps, local transfers, lockers and shopping. For bullet-train platforms and boarding, use the separate Shinagawa Shinkansen guide.

Start with the official Shinagawa Station map

Open JR East's Shinagawa Station floor maps and select the floor you need. The 2F map checked on 10 October 2026 is labelled July 2026; it shows the Central Gate, North Gate, Keikyu transfer, Konan and Takanawa exits, Shinkansen entrances and accessible routes. It also marks construction areas. Follow the signs and staff directions on your travel day if a walkway has changed.

For the bullet-train part of your journey, use JR Central's station maps and choose Shinagawa. Keep your destination address and the station map available before moving between platforms or leaving a gate.

Konan Exit or Takanawa Exit: which side do you need?

Shinagawa exit sides and useful landmarks
Exit sideWhat to look forBefore leaving
Konan Exit / East ExitThe east end of the public concourse; atré Shinagawa is on this side.Check that your hotel, office or meeting address is on the Konan side.
Takanawa Exit / West ExitThe west end of the concourse, near the Keikyu side of the station.Check your destination's access instructions and any construction diversions.

The JR Central Gate and North Gate are ticket gates into or out of the conventional JR area. Konan and Takanawa describe the two outside directions. After leaving the appropriate JR gate, follow the signs for your exit side. Do not leave the paid area just to change JR trains if your route and ticket allow an internal transfer.

When meeting someone, agree on the full gate or exit name and whether the meeting point is inside or outside the ticket gates. “Shinagawa Station” alone is too broad for a reliable meeting point.

JR lines and Keikyu transfers

The official maps identify the Yamanote Line, Keihin-Tohoku Line, Tokaido/Ueno-Tokyo services, Yokosuka/Sobu services and Keikyu connection. Use the departure display for the line, direction and actual train; services on the same platform can have different destinations.

For a JR-to-JR connection, follow the signs for the next line while remaining inside the JR area when permitted by your ticket. For a JR–Keikyu connection, look for the Keikyu transfer gate shown on the map. Each operator's journey still needs the correct fare and ticket or IC-card handling. Follow the instructions for your actual tickets, and ask gate staff before tapping or inserting an unfamiliar combination.

A fixed transfer time or an old instruction such as “turn at the KIOSK” can be unreliable during station works. Allow time for walking, lifts, queues and ticket questions. If you need step-free access, use the accessible route and lift symbols on the current map rather than following the nearest staircase.

Haneda Airport access from Shinagawa

Keikyu connects Shinagawa with Haneda Airport. The airport's official train guide identifies the airport rail connections; use the Keikyu route and fare search for your terminal, travel date and departure time.

Confirm whether your selected service is direct or requires a transfer. The airport station for Terminals 1 and 2 differs from Terminal 3. The Tokyo Monorail connects Haneda with Hamamatsucho, so it is a different route from the Keikyu connection to Shinagawa.

Check the fare and travel time for the selected terminal and service. For an onward Shinkansen after a flight, allow for immigration, baggage collection, airport walking, service disruption and the station transfer before selecting a departure.

Coin lockers and luggage storage

JR Central's map marks coin lockers and baggage-storage facilities around the station. Choose a location you can reach both when dropping off and when collecting your bag: a locker inside a ticketed area may require the appropriate access again.

  • Check the locker size, price, payment method, maximum storage period and collection conditions on the machine.
  • Record the exact location, gate side and locker number; keep the receipt or key.
  • Allow collection time before your train, and have a backup if large lockers are full.

A map symbol does not establish live locker availability, staffed-storage hours or a particular IC-card payment method. If you cannot find a suitable locker, ask station staff about current options before leaving your luggage anywhere.

Storage at the station is separate from permission to take a suitcase on a train. For Shinkansen travel, check the oversized-baggage guide and the conditions for your train.

Food and shopping: ecute or atré?

ecute Shinagawa: the shops inside the JR ticket gates are useful for food, gifts and other purchases during a transfer. Check the official access and opening-hours page. Visitors entering from outside need a qualifying JR ticket, an admission ticket or the applicable IC admission service. An admission ticket or IC admission is not a train ticket, and its time limit applies.

atré Shinagawa: this is the separate complex on the Konan side, shown outside the conventional JR paid area on the station map. Its official access page gives the address as Konan 2-18-1 and identifies FOOD & TIME ISETAN on 3F. Do not confuse that floor with ecute. Check the current shop directory for restaurant locations and individual hours.

Choose food or shopping on the side you can access without disrupting your ticketed journey. Leave time to return to the correct train gate. Restaurant opening times, tenants and last orders can change.

Shinkansen and onward local journeys

Shinagawa is a Tokaido Shinkansen stop for travel towards Nagoya, Kyoto and Shin-Osaka, with some services continuing along the Sanyo Shinkansen. Follow the dedicated Shinkansen entrance or transfer signs and use our platform, gate and boarding guide for that part of the journey.

For hotels, attractions, buses and taxis, use the destination's current access instructions and check which exit and stop they specify. A general east/west description does not establish a particular bus service, walking time or sheltered route. Choose your exit using the full address rather than a claim that one side is always better.
