Facilities on Japanese Trains: What You Need to Know

Traveling by train in Japan is a comfortable and efficient way to explore the country. Japanese trains, renowned for their punctuality and cleanliness, come equipped with a variety of facilities to enhance your journey. Here’s what you can expect:

Toilet Facilities

Nearly all long-distance trains, including the iconic Shinkansen (bullet trains), are equipped with clean and well-maintained toilets. They’re all equipped sinks with running water too. In many cases, baby-changing stations and accessible restrooms for passengers with mobility needs are also available.

Luggage Storage Options

Japanese trains provide ample storage options for luggage:

Overhead Racks: Smaller suitcases, backpacks, and handbags can be placed on overhead racks located above your seat.

Designated Luggage Areas: Some trains, particularly the Shinkansen, have spaces at the end of each car for larger luggage items.

For travelers on the Tokaido, Sanyo, and Kyushu Shinkansen, note that if your luggage exceeds 160 cm (height + width + depth), you will need to make a separate reservation for oversized baggage. This ensures a reserved storage space at the end of your car and helps avoid inconvenience during your journey.

Food and Drinks: Plan Ahead

Unlike in the past, most trains no longer offer on-board sales of food and drinks. The only exception is on Green Cars (first class) of some routes, where limited snacks and beverages may be available. To enjoy a meal or snack on your trip, purchase items in advance at station convenience stores, supermarkets, or kiosks. Many travelers pick up a packed ekiben (bento box) in the station to enjoy during their ride.

Traveling by train in Japan is not just about getting from one place to another—it’s an experience in itself. With a little preparation, your journey can be smooth, enjoyable, and stress-free!
