Shinkansen Baggage Rules: Sizes, Reserved Seats & Fees

Measure your suitcase, then check every train in your itinerary. On the Tokaido, Sanyo, Kyushu and Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen, ordinary baggage over 160 cm and up to 250 cm in combined dimensions needs the appropriate oversized-baggage seat reservation. That particular reservation system is not a rule for every train in Japan.
A multi-city holiday often adds airport trains, local connections and station walks to the bullet-train journey. A bag that is allowed aboard may still be awkward to carry through those connections. Plan storage, lifting and transfers alongside the ticket.

Measure the bag you will actually bring
Add length, width and height, including the outside dimensions of wheels and handles. A suitcase measuring 78 × 52 × 32 cm totals 162 cm, so it crosses the 160 cm threshold. Marketing labels such as “large,” “28-inch” or “airline checked baggage” do not tell you the combined railway dimensions.
| Combined dimensions | Planning action |
|---|---|
| 160 cm or less | Use suitable racks, space at your feet or available designated storage; a size-based oversized reservation is not required. |
| Over 160 cm and up to 250 cm | Reserve the appropriate seat with an oversized baggage area before travel. |
| Over 250 cm | Do not bring it aboard as ordinary baggage; investigate another transport arrangement. |
JR Central also states limits of two qualifying baggage pieces per passenger, each up to 30 kg, with a maximum length of 200 cm. Small personal effects are treated separately. Special equipment has its own provisions, so check the operator guidance rather than applying the ordinary suitcase table to everything.
Reserve storage for the Shinkansen segment
For an applicable journey, the reservation links baggage storage to a qualifying seat. Simply buying an ordinary reserved seat, a Green Car seat or a JR Pass does not establish that reservation. Tell the ticket seller what you need and check the issued seat category.
The railway does not add a baggage-area premium over the corresponding reserved-seat fare. A seller may have separate service charges, so review its final total. Bringing oversized baggage without the required reservation can result in a ¥1,000 handling fee and directions from staff; paying the fee is not a way to guarantee boarding or storage.
If the right baggage seats are unavailable or your train changes
Choose a departure with a suitable baggage-area seat or arrange luggage delivery. Entering dimensions or leaving a request with a ticket seller does not by itself confirm storage; check the seat arrangement actually issued. If you change or miss your train, confirm the baggage reservation for the replacement service before boarding. A non-reserved carriage is not a substitute for a required oversized-baggage seat.
JR Central’s general missed-train guidance requires an appropriate new reserved-seat limited-express ticket with baggage storage for the following train. Check the payment and change rules of your actual ticket or pass with the seller. A non-reserved-seat fallback available for some tickets does not let you take an ordinary oversized suitcase into a non-reserved car.
Check the current deck-storage arrangement
JR Central’s current guidance describes a trial allowing some deck compartments to be used without a reservation for baggage of 160 cm or less. That does not remove the reservation requirement for bags over 160 cm. The space behind seats designated for oversized baggage is reserved for the passengers entitled to use it.
JR Central describes the deck-storage example on selected reserved cars of Nozomi, Hikari and Kodama services on the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen. Do not assume every service has the same compartment. Shared deck storage for bags of 160 cm or less does not guarantee an available space and does not replace the reserved area required for oversized suitcases. Follow the posted locking instructions; some IC cards or mobile terminals cannot operate the lock.
Strollers, sports equipment and musical instruments
JR Central lists these separately from ordinary oversized suitcases. The oversized-suitcase reservation rule has exceptions for these items, but using the designated oversized area still requires the relevant reservation. Check the operator’s packing and carriage conditions for your item; some special items have different dimension provisions. Keep aisles and doors clear.
Plan the local connection separately
Conventional local trains do not use this same Shinkansen oversized-seat reservation system. Available space, rush-hour crowding and the practical difficulty of handling the bag still matter. Keep doors and aisles clear, and look for an elevator route before you arrive at an unfamiliar interchange.
For a Shinkansen arrival in Osaka, review the Shin-Osaka connection rather than assuming the train arrives at Osaka Station. For Tokyo, use a station map to plan the walk between the relevant gates and your onward line.
When luggage delivery may make the trip easier
Consider forwarding the main suitcase when your journey has several transfers, a short rural stay or a station route with difficult lifting. Confirm collection deadlines, delivery dates, bag limits and whether the receiving hotel accepts luggage. Do not assume all services deliver on the same day.
Carry medication, valuables and enough clothing for the delivery interval yourself. If you are traveling onward before the bag arrives, arrange a destination where it can be received rather than relying on a tight same-day connection.
Your pre-booking baggage checklist
- Record each bag’s combined dimensions, weight and longest side.
- Identify the exact Shinkansen corridor and operator for each rail segment.
- Confirm an oversized-baggage seat where required, including after any train change.
- Check elevator access and the final walk to your accommodation.
- If the suitable seats are unavailable, choose another departure or confirm a viable forwarding service.
When you search intercity journeys on JapanTrain, use measured dimensions to decide which seat arrangement to request. Treat the seller’s confirmation as evidence of the issued reservation, rather than assuming a luggage note guarantees the space.
Choosing how to pay for the wider trip? Compare JR Pass prices, coverage and individual tickets. Whichever ticket you choose, confirm the required baggage-area seat separately.

Frequently asked questions
Does every train in Japan require an oversized luggage reservation?
No. The specified reservation system applies to the Tokaido, Sanyo, Kyushu and Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen. Check other lines separately.
Is a suitcase totaling exactly 160 cm oversized under this rule?
No. The oversized threshold is over 160 cm. Other baggage limits and safe storage requirements still apply.
Does a JR Pass include an oversized baggage seat automatically?
No. You need to reserve the appropriate seat for the applicable train.
Are strollers treated exactly like ordinary oversized suitcases?
No. JR Central lists exceptions for strollers, musical instruments and sports equipment. Using a reserved oversized area still requires its reservation.
Does reserving an oversized-baggage seat cost extra?
The railway charges the same as the corresponding ordinary reserved or Green seat fare. Check the ticket seller’s complete total and any separate service fees.
Can I pay ¥1,000 on board instead of reserving baggage space?
The handling fee is not a guaranteed alternative to reserving. Staff will direct storage, and you may need another departure when suitable space is unavailable. Reserve the required baggage-area seat before travel.
Can ordinary baggage of 160 cm or less go in a non-reserved car?
The size-based oversized-baggage reservation is not required for an ordinary bag of 160 cm or less. Your train and ticket must still allow non-reserved travel, and you must store the bag safely. Some services or peak-period Nozomi trains have no non-reserved seats.
How many baggage pieces and how much weight are allowed?
JR Central lists two qualifying pieces per passenger, each weighing 30 kg or less, with combined dimensions no more than 250 cm and a maximum length of 200 cm. Small personal effects and special items have separate provisions; oversized suitcases still need the required seat reservation.
Can I use the deck baggage storage without a reservation?
JR Central describes shared deck storage for baggage of 160 cm or less on selected services. No reservation is required for that arrangement, but space is not guaranteed. The oversized area behind reserved seats remains for passengers with the corresponding reservation.
What happens if I miss a train with an oversized-baggage reservation?
Confirm an appropriate new reserved-seat ticket with baggage storage for the replacement train before boarding. Payment and change conditions depend on your ticket or pass. An ordinary oversized suitcase cannot use a non-reserved-seat fallback just because your original train was missed.
